400 Years in Manhattan400 Years in Manhattan
400 Years in Manhattan publicity design; Noah Diamond performing the show in 2007
400 Years in Manhattan (2007) is a one-person play written and performed by Noah Diamond and directed by Amanda Sisk. It was the fourth production from Nero Fiddled, preceded by Moral Value Meal (2006) and followed by Life After Bush (2008). Unlike those shows, however, 400 Years in Manhattan is not a musical satire of current politics. Subtitled "A Tour Guide's History," the show tells the story of the island of Manhattan, along with memories from Diamond's seven-year career as a New York City tour guide. The play is accompanied by an animated slideshow, showing New York City's development over four centuries.
Original production
400 Years in Manhattan premiered in October of 2007 at New York City's HERE Arts Center. Lighting design by Christopher Brown. Sound design by Amanda Sisk. John Del Signore of Gothamist described the show as "a theatrical journey which takes not just one loop around town but rolls through four centuries of city history." Martin Denton of nytheatre.com called 400 Years in Manhattan "delightful and fascinating...a panoramic and engaging journey through the history of Manhattan...unfailingly intelligent, often quite funny, and sometimes authentically profound and wise...Perhaps the most effective use of multimedia I've yet seen in the theatre...Thoroughly enlightening and entertaining...one of the best times I've had in the theatre in quite a while." The show goes on
Diamond and Sisk are now booking the show at New York area colleges and universities.
