Premiering late in 2004, and seen by some as a liberal answer to the similar but more conservative-leaning show The McPatton Thing, Suckerpunch was widely acknowledged as the political equivalent of a wrestling match. Memmons, typically "moderating" debates between guests from the left and right, became a fixture of the political landscape, alternately loved and hated for his blunt lines of questioning, his frequently esoteric film and literary references, and his tendency to misspeak.

In 2005, Memmons received a great deal of criticism for saying, of Condoleezza Rice, "She reminds me of my father, who stank all the time, from fish."

In one memorable 2007 episode, Memmons hurled a BlackBerry at conservative commentator Ralph Piss, calling him "an ugly fascist."

Memmons has frequently been accused of being overly fond of Barack Obama, having said on a February 2008 episode that "every time the guy talks, I can feel my entire body tingling with excitement, like a schoolgirl would tingle."

In 2008, during the contentious Democratic primaries, former President Bill Clinton made a surprise appearance on Suckerpunch, physically attacking Obama spokesman David Mulberry-Schwartz.
